How to Cut Rigid Foam Insulation: 15 Steps (with Pictures)

Nov 16, 2019Lay the rigid foam insulation on a flat surface. Keeping the board flat while you cut will help you make a precise cut. If you don't have a work table, find a flat and smooth surface for cutting your foam insulation. Do not cut rigid foam insulation on decorative tables unless you lay out a protective barrier, like a knife block.

Rigid Foam Insulation: What Is It And What Are Its Uses

Closed cell foam board insulation is strong and possesses a higher R-value than open cell insulation. R-values indicate the level of thermal resistance of an insulating material. Open cell insulations, like soft batt insulation, possess of lower R-value than rigid foam board. Rigid foam also

Buyer's Guide to Insulation: Rigid Foam

Rigid-foam insulation is a more effective air barrier than batts or blown-in insulation, especially if the seams between sheets are carefully sealed with caulk, canned spray foam, or tape. Rigid foam is routinely used to insulate the interior or exterior of foundation walls.

Best Crawl Space Insulation Materials

The best insulation material for crawl spaces is rigid foam insulation board. Instead of installing the foam insulation between floor joists in the crawl space, the foam board is installed against the crawl space foundation walls. Unlike fiberglass, rigid foam insulation does not absorb water, support mold or allow air to pass through

Rigid Insulation Boards

MEPS foam board also is often used as the insulation for structural insulated panels (SIPS) and insulating concrete forms (ICFs). One of my personal pole buildings, at my home, utilizes rigid insulation boards, ICFs, on 2-1/2 walls of the lowest level. Extruded expanded polystyrene (XEPS) is a closed-cell foam insulation similar to MEPS.

How to Install Rigid Foam On Top of Roof Sheathing

Apr 03, 2015If you want to install rigid foam above your roof sheathing in Climate Zone 3, then 1/2 inch of rigid foam board is not ideal. This rigid foam layer needs a minimum R-value of R-5, and that's impossible with 1/2 inch of foam. As my article states, you need a minimum of about 1.5 inch of EPS, 1 inch of XPS, or 1 inch of polyiso.

What You Need to Know About Foam Board Insulation

This foam board insulation is the rigid pink or blue panels that can be found at home centers in many different thicknesses. It is denser than EPS and provides more R-Value with a rating of 5 per inch of thickness. This foam board insulation is available with straight or tongue-and-groove edges to help limit air movement. It is available in all

Rigid Foam Insulation

Rigid foam can be used in walls, roofs, and foundations, for retrofits or new construction. Most varieties of foam have a higher R-value per inch than fiberglass, cotton, or cellulose. There are three main types of rigid foam insulation: expanded polystyrene (EPS), extruded polystyrene (XPS), and polyisocyanurate.

Rigid Foam Board Insulation for Existing Band Joists

Many rigid foam board manufacturers apply a thin polyethylene film to both sides of the panels to strengthen them and to make them impermeable to vapor. Use unfaced sheets, or remove the film from the rigid foam board prior to installation, particularly to allow some breathability at the band joist area.

Best way to seal seams in foam board?

If it's possible to remove and re-attach the foam board, I would suggest either a foam-compatible adhesive caulk or low-expansion spray foam applied to each joint, particularly the non TG butt joints. Using two layers of 1 foam board, with staggered and sealed joints is an even better way of guaranteeing a good air barrier.

2 Problems With Foam Insulation Board

Insulation Foam Board Problems Rigid Insulation Is Rigid! Because foam board insulation isn't flexible, it does a poor job filling the gaps and cracks that exist in walls. As a result, air passes though these areas. Air traveling in an out will bring moisture with it. This can lead to a multitude of problems such as mold, mildew and rot.

Rigid Insulation Boards Part II: Foam Board

Foam board insulation is commonly placed against the steel building siding, between the girts of exterior walls. To prevent air infiltration, place rigid insulation boards tightly together and seal the seams with tape or caulk. This practice may worry some in cold climates since the foam board may act as a second vapor diffusion retarder.
